The Internet VS Mobile In 2012

In 2011 the number of Internet users increased by 8% and there are no signs of slowing down. During this same year there were 953 million smartphone subscribers and 6.1 billion mobile phone subscriptions globally. We are in a mobile world – cliche, but true. While in other parts of the world we see folks using mobile phones (feature phones and smartphones) as their main connection to the internet, we are starting to see more and more people turn to smartphones and tablets as their device of choice when accessing the web inside the United States. This trend will only grow more over the next couple of years. It’s where we are headed. If you can’t see the writing on the wall or lack the vision to understand where our world is headed, you may need to seek help.

Do you know the top 10 countries with the most internet users? If you are in mobile marketing – you should take a look at Mexico and Nigeria! These two countries are on a fast pace of growth with 42 million and 45 million users respectively!

Clearly Android is winning the battle when it comes to the most activations of smartphones, especially in a global sense. However, the opposite can be said with respect to tablets. The iPad is the clear winner with the bulk of cumulative shipments across the globe. If you are running any mobile marketing – these two facts alone are great starting points.

Mobile in 2013 should easily surpass these numbers found within the infographic below. More devices will be available, more areas should receive internet coverage, and the desire to be online will only grow more. We are expecting to see desktop usage to continue it’s decline, especially with respect to casual surfing. Stay tuned…
