The Facebook Open Social Graph Gets More Powerful with Mention Tagging

Facebook continues to push the envelope when it comes to social interactions and with today’s news release about “mention tagging”, as a part of the Facebook open social graph, the social network has provided yet another avenue to extend social actions in a cool way. It is noted on the Facebook development blog that this new feature MAY NOT be autofilled by developer’s code. Instead, participation within this new form of tagging must be performed by a user and must have the intent to be shared across facebook.

What Is Mention Tagging on Facebook?

Lets first define “Action Tagging”. Action tagging allows you to include a friend’s name in your shared action because they are participating with you. ”Mention Tagging”, on the other hand, allows you to bring an action, that you are doing or have done, to your friends attention.

NOTE: If you have already been approved by Facebook to use open graph for your defined functions, then simply resubmit your actions and request approval for both “user messages” and “tags.” Want to have your resubmission looked at and approved quickly – send more information about your open

Facebook Timeline Actions

When a Facebook user mentions a friend in an Open Graph app with mention tagging, the story on Facebook will then link that friend’s name to their timeline, and that friend will receive a notification. This same story will be added to the friend’s timeline.

Potential Benefits of Mention Tagging with Apps

How can mention tagging be useful for marketers? Well, let’s say for example that you have a recipe site with open social graph enabled. Perhaps one of your users clicks a certain button on your site to download (20 Minute Meals PDF). Upon doing so, the user is able to mention tag the action.

Mention tagging has the power to help you, the content producer/app owner, virally spread your message. If your users find value in your content/app, then this mention tagging has the power to help you push your message in a cool way.
