Serial Internet Entrepreneur: What My Friends Think I Do, What I Think I Do, More
Over the last several days I’ve seen several of the images above grow virally through the Facebook news feed. From everything to being a West Virginia University student to an Affiliate Marketing Ninja; I’ve seen a lot of them! I figured I’d make me one so I could talk about some people’s perception of Internet Entrepreneurs.
What my neighbors think I do… I honestly believe my neighbors think I’m the director of adult websites or just some over privileged kid. From loud music complaints to people coming over at all hours of the night, I’m not the most popular guy in the hood. Given most of my neighbors are 50+ and enjoying their “golden years” I’m a young adult in my late twenties getting my start. I’m single, have my own businesses, and don’t have any children. My “retiree” neighbors can’t understand WHY someone wouldn’t go to bed at 8:00 p.m. They also don’t understand why I can’t drive a 400-hp car through their neighborhood at 25 MPH. They think everyone should drive a Mercedes sedan with classical music at exactly 15 decibels not exceeding 15 MPH. Since I’ve been 22 years old I’ve lived in neighborhoods were the majority of the population is older. Some of them know me as the “Internet Guy” but who knows what they really think. The above picture shows me longing by the pool drinking some ritzy sparkling water!
What my friends think I do… Given a lot of my friends are located all over the United States – Kansas, Missouri, Florida, West Virginia, Utah, North Carolina, etc. we mostly stay on touch via Facebook. When friends see the pictures from the conferences and events they’re usually in awe with the bottles of top-shelf liquor and champagne over chilled ice. They make the assumption that given I travel a lot that must be “all I do.” “Did you hear about the Ryan Gray?! He made like a trillion dollars online and parties like all the time.” – I’m sure I get that… Probably a lot of hate too, but I’m too busy to acknowledge it! The above picture is from a party at Affiliate Summit East this past August in New York City.
What my mother thinks I do… Picture says it all. I love my mother to death but if you asked her what I did all she would be able to explain is “something with computers.” In her eyes I’m the brilliant IQ son that heads into the office every morning dressing like Mr. Gates himself. The above picture shows a corporate photo of Microsoft founder Bill Gates.
What newbies think I do… Some people just getting into the industry may think a trillion dollars is just five minutes a day and a click away. They have not yet began to understand the long term aspects to having a business and focusing on things such as investing and capital/wealth preservation. While they think having a lot of money ends all problems and stress it actually brings a lot more of both! The above picture is me working in a Delta Skyclub in Atlanta.
What I think I do… Obviously my favorite thing to do in this world is to public speak. I discovered in college that I really enjoyed presenting material that I’m incredibly passionate about. Speaking at any IMGrind event, I consider to be the most privileged thing of my career. The above picture is me speaking at Grind Mastermind West last month.
What I really do… This photo doesn’t really give it justice. I’m currently sitting here in the office with about a three-day beard, my hair needs cut badly (the gray is coming out along with growing down my neck) and I’m running on a couple hours of sleep. I have a pair of loafers on without socks and basketball shorts that contain a cigarette burn. Over the last week I’ve been very focused on obtaining goals and bringing things right along with the changing times in 2012. Just recently we began exploring a new organic source of traffic that I consider “ten times larger and more valuable” than Google. Obviously the people the get on the quickest and expand while the competition is low will be rewarded with handsome ROIs. I’m so excited and gun-ho about this, I’m willing to pull all the hours in everyday to completely master it before the competition does – my passion. The above picture was taken in the office about five minutes ago.
So Who Am I?! Well, it’s a free country so you’re all free to form your own opinion of me. I will say though that I consider myself a pretty straight forward guy with a passion for being an Entrepreneur. I do not put on a show or come off as materialistic or fake. I treat everyone with the same respect and am very blessed to have sustained solid business partnerships and have a supportive family and loving girlfriend. I’m a real people person and am really addicted to travel. If I have free-time I like spending it on an airplane heading to somewhere new and exciting only if its for a weekend. However if you were to do a pie chart of my time on this earth it would majority be online. I LOVE the Internet and don’t feel like I’ve worked a day in my life.

Good job, spot on. Except I think home-based entreprenuers are in their underwear 75% of the time for “what I really do”.
