Facebook Confirms Testing of New One Column Timeline Design

Big news this morning in the Facebook blog circles with respect to the Facebook timeline. A couple months back there was much conversation surrounding the tests that were taking place on the timeline. It was said that Facebook was working on a single column timeline, instead of the “ping-ponging” left/right columns.

Mari Smith, well known for her knowledge in social media, received a beta test version of her timeline for which she took a screenshot and catalogued all of the changes spotted. Coming soon to a profile near you, here are the listed changes that were spotted (as reported by Mari Smith):

  • Your name will appear in white font on your cover photo next to your profile pic
  • Profile photo now sites lower on the cover photo
  • Cover photo remains the same size
  • New, WIDER – Single column display for posts
  • Highlighting a post NO LONGER extends the post across two columns for a wide view of the content. It now appends a bookmarking ribbon at the top right corner
  • Subscribers are now referred to as “followers”
  • New tabbed design “MORE” displays all sections
  • About, Friends, and Photo tabs remain in that order

changes

Another interesting change spotted by ABC News realates to subscriber/follower numbers. Previously, Facebook would truncate numbers in the following format. If you had 1,000 subscribers or followers, Facebook would truncate that number to 1K. It has been observed by those selected by Facebook to get the beta testing of these changes that this number now reflects the full value.

What do all these changes mean for Facebook Fan Pages? Well, Facebook isn’t saying at the moment, but I would imagine that similar changes will follow. Not too long ago, myself, Ruck and Ryan were discussing a study that stated interaction on pages tabs had taken a nose dive with the new timeline roll out. It could be that Facebook revamps this again for pages. Time will tell. Keep your eyes peeled.
