Alibaba Serves Up A Pinterest Clone With A Twist

As often happens with popular sites and services, others see the opportunities and jump on the bandwagon. There have been some Pinterest like sites out there, including Pinterests predecesor Kaboodle, but few with the resources behind them like the site Fa Xian which is backed by the Chinese powerhouse Alibaba.

The site looks and feels a bit like Pinterest but they are monetizing the site by making each item pinned available for sale through Taobao Mall or Taobao Marketplace, both of which are owned by Alibaba and there are plans to include other retailers outside of those two owned by Alibaba.  The site is still in beta, but with the growth of social commerce and the size of the Chinese market of over a half a billion internet users, the opportunities are big.

It will be interesting to see what other sites pop up to address what is obviously a hot market. It also makes me wonder what the future hold for Pinterest after the changes to its business model when it removed the affiliate linking through Skimlinks, could an e-commerce play be in the future? Should be interesting.
